2017 IAPBP Image of the Year Competition
Another year, another competition by The International Association of Professional Birth Photographers! What an awesome experience for the contestants, the judges, and the public to be able to see all of these fantastic images that have been captured throughout this past year.
This competition isn't just about winning a title and prize, but about normalizing birth...normalizing womens' bodies and the incredible metamorphosis that is pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period...we share these images with the world to shed light on these transformations, in whatever way that they happen. You will view beautiful pictures of ALL types of births and ALL types of families. Birth is universal and real. We are so looking forward to all of the entries going live in a few days so the world can see these journeys and transformative moments.
The categories this year were Labor, Delivery, Postpartum, and a new subject- Details! Below are our entries. It was so hard to pick, and we wanted to enter one or more from every birth we attended this past year! Unfortunately, we could only choose a few, and this is what we went with...
The details in this image are not only of mom's hands that she embraced her husband with through her entire labor with their second baby boy, but it also brings focus to the ring on her hand, which has great significance to this mom. This sweet little breastmilk ring holds the milk that nourished their firstborn son for 26 months.
This was the image that won the Birth Becomes Her image contest, so we went with this as an entry for this competition as well. We love the strength it shows and demonstrates the moment that every mother reaches in labor...desperation and a feeling of loss of control, but with strength, power, and determination.
Sometimes we are called in a "birth photographer emergency"! This photo was taken at a birth we were called into by another photographer last minute, but luckily we are always prepared to capture incredible moments like this!
We love this moment of this sweet little boys' dad holding him for the first time...
This was a water birth born babe being lifted out of the pool just moments after birth. We love how she is curled up as if she never left the womb!
We wish the best of luck to all of the contestants! What an honor to stand beside the AMAZING photographers that have entered this year. Entering this competition is always a humbling experience, as there is so much talent and so many incredible judges. We are thankful to all of the wonderful, open, and strong families willing to have their images shared on a big, big platform. Good luck!!
